Dir Stephanie Hockley Designed by Frankie Bradshaw The Liverpool Actors Studio Theatre 36 Seel Street, Liverpool, L1 4BE Friday 14 & Saturday 15 June, 7.30pm Matinee: Saturday 15th June, 2.00pm LIPA Acting Graduates present a new adaptation of Simon Stephens PUNK ROCK at the Liverpool Actors Studio Theatre from Friday 14th June to Saturday 15th June 2013 This new production tells the story of William Carlisle, a brilliant but troubled student at a Sixth Form in Stockport. The play follows the lives of William and his classmates, as they prepare for mock A-levels, whilst tackling the pressures of teenage life head on. They are educated and aspirational, but slowly they discover the disjunction, aggression and tensions within their friendship group, and the impact this has on all their lives, giving an insight into the cryptic youth culture of today. Simon Stephens Punk Rock premièred at the Manchester Royal Exchange in 2009, before transferring to the Lyric Hammersmith. The play, credited by Variety to "confirm Simon Stephens as one of the most important and exciting British playwrights working today, holds an important place in the world of modern playwriting, and was both a critical and commercial success. A popular study text at both AS and A level, the play still today has a strong fan base and a strong connection to the youth of Britain today. Rheumatic fever, which he first contracted as a child, damaged his heart and ultimately contributed to his death. An early British rock and roll (and film) star, he equalled The Beatles' record of 24 hits in the 1960s, and spent 332 weeks on the UK chart, without a chart-topping single or album. Allmusic journalist, Bruce Eder, stated, "His mix of rough-hewn good looks and unassuming masculinity, coupled with an underlying vulnerability, all presented with a good voice and some serious musical talent, helped turn Fury into a major rock and roll star in short order". Others have suggested that Fury's rapid rise to prominence was due to his "Elvis Presley-influenced, hip-swivelling, and at times highly suggestive stage act." - www.theliverpoolactorsstudio.com MASC - A showcase of Modern Musical Theatre Saturday 20 April 2013 The Liverpool Actors Studio Theatre 3pm & 7.30pm MASC Launches in Liverpool MASC Presents an upbeat showcase of modern musical theatre.
