The Affordable Vintage Fashion Fair

9th May 2009

The Affordable Vintage Fashion Fair is coming to Liverpool on Saturday 9th May, held at The Engine Room in Liverpool John Moores University Students’ Union.

Featuring over 40 stalls, the event provides a perfect playground for fashionistas, young and old looking to find a rare gem or unique piece for their wardrobe, from 1940’s lingerie to 50s clutch bags, 60s suits, 70s blouses and 80s jumpsuits.

Originating in 2005 It has been heralded as a ‘shopping phenomenon’ by the national press and is one of the most successful fashion events in the UK, proving extremely popular with fashion savvy shoppers in cities including London, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle Northampton and Sheffield.

With celebrities such as Alexa Cheung, Fearne Cotton, and Peaches Geldof turning to second-hand style, Vintage is definitely back in vogue. But as people tighten their belts and look for ways to save pennies, The Affordable Vintage Fashion Fair ensures that both men and women can still follow trend but without having to spend a fortune.

The Affordable Vintage Fashion Fair is by no means a rag and bone jumble sale but a popular and un-missable fashion event that picks only the best vintage retailers and traders from around the UK and gathers them together under one roof. In Liverpool, it has teamed up with local shops and designers including Preserved Vintage, Sydney Ann and Flashback Boutique, a popular store owned by Liverpool John Moores fashion student Susannah O’Driscoll who recently showcased her talent at Graduate Fahion Week in London.

The founder of The Affordable Vintage Fashion Fair is fashion entrepreneur and vintage guru Judy Berger, a former Selfridge’s personal shopper and TV fashion stylist. She said; “I lived in London for nearly 10 years and fell in love with Portobello and Spitalfield market. When I moved back up north it was hard to find somewhere that matched the essence of those places, so I decided to set up an event that created that same vibe and offered a similar shopping experience. Over the last two years we’ve seen a huge increase in people coming to our events. I think people still like their high street shops but are tired of seeing everyone wearing the same things. ”

Judy who also runs the largest British clothes swap website www.whatsmineisyours.com goes on to say; “. Our events are like treasure chests. There’s something magical about finding a perfect vintage dress or blouse as they come with a little bit of history attached to them making them individual and unique, which is something you can’t get in a mainstream store.”

The Fair will be open at the Engine Room from 11am-4pm and will also have live music courtesy of singer Ruby Macintosh, a 3rd year student from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. For more information visit - www.vintagefair.co.uk.
